During pregnancy planning: Supplemental folate intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. The beneficial effect is obtained with a supplemental folic acid daily intake of 400 μg for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
During pregnancy: During this time, folates contribute to maternal tissue growth. Specific nutrients, such as iron, magnesium, and vitamin D, play a role in the process of cell division, which is critical for fetal growth.
During breastfeeding: Maternal intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contributes to the normal brain and eye development of the fetus and breastfed infants.
