Electrolytes, isotonic and sports drinks

Electrolytes, isotonic drinks and sports drinks help you plan fluids, minerals and carbohydrates for training, racing and hot weather. This section includes Isostar electrolyte drinks, isotonic powders, tablets and sports drinks for running, cycling, triathlon and active days. If you need a sports drink for one session, an electrolyte drink for hot days or an isotonic drink for longer efforts, choose by effort duration, sweat rate and whether you need minerals only or extra energy during exercise.

When to choose electrolytes or an isotonic drink

Electrolytes are most useful when a session lasts longer than an hour, the weather is warm or you sweat heavily. Isotonic drinks combine fluids, minerals and often carbohydrates, so they work well for endurance sport, racing and longer activities. For the wider starting point, see the full sports nutrition and vitamins section.

Short or easy training

On an easy day, water may be enough. Electrolytes become more relevant when it is hot, the session is longer or you notice higher salt loss after exercise.

Longer endurance efforts

During a long run or ride, combine your drink with energy gels or energy bars to plan both fluids and carbohydrates.

After training

After a harder session, replace fluids gradually. For the recovery step, you can also use protein drinks.

Common questions about electrolytes

What is the difference between electrolytes and an isotonic drink?

An electrolyte product usually focuses on minerals such as sodium and magnesium. An isotonic drink often adds carbohydrates too, making it closer to a sports drink for use during exercise.

Do I need electrolytes in every workout?

No, not always. For short and easy sessions, normal daily nutrition and water may be enough, while longer or hotter efforts benefit more from a clear hydration plan.

How should I use electrolytes on race day?

Test the product in training and avoid changing your plan on race morning. Follow the manufacturer's serving guidance and adjust fluid intake to weather, pace and your sweat rate.
