No single procedure “repairs” your legs after a marathon. The first 72 hours are built on fluids and electrolytes appropriate to losses, regular meals, carbohydrate, protein, sleep and gentle movement.

Massage guns and compression boots are optional comfort tools. They do not replace eating, sleeping or paying attention to warning signs.

Key points

0–6 h: fluids, food and easy walking.
6–24 h: sleep, no aggressive treatment.
24–72 h: gentle movement guided by symptoms.

0–6 hours

Walk calmly for 5–10 minutes, change into dry clothes and drink in small portions. Eat a meal or snack with carbohydrate, protein and appropriate salt. Seek medical help for confusion, repeated vomiting, chest pain, major breathlessness or very dark urine with severe muscle pain.

6–24 hours

Eat regularly and prioritise sleep. A short walk may help stiffness. If using percussion, choose low intensity over large muscles; with compression, use comfortable low pressure. Stop if symptoms worsen.

24–48 hours

DOMS may increase. Walking, very easy cycling or brief mobility is reasonable only if movement improves. This is not the day for a hard fitness test.

48–72 hours

If stairs are comfortable and there is no sharp local pain, consider a short, very easy activity. Return to running does not have to happen on day three. Unilateral swelling, rest pain, progressive weakness or altered gait need assessment.

Frequently asked questions

When can I use a massage gun after a marathon?

If there are no signs of acute injury, use it briefly at low intensity over large muscles and stop if pain increases.

Do compression boots accelerate recovery?

They may improve perceived comfort, but research does not show guaranteed objective benefit for everyone.

When should I run again?

There is no universal deadline. Return gradually when daily movement is comfortable and easy activity does not worsen symptoms.
